a. About Beijing and Shanghai
- Is it safe to intern in Beijing
and Shanghai?
- We would say yes, very safe, since the public security
in Beijing and Shanghai is excellent compared with
most big cities over the world. However, we recommend that interns,
especially girls, not go to suburban areas at night, not go with
strangers, not take drugs, not drink too much, and not do anything
prohibited by Chinese law.
- Will it be difficult to live in China
if I do not speak Chinese?
- Not in most cases, because Beijing
and Shanghai
are very globalized cosmopolitan cities. However, some old people may
not be able to speak English. Don't panic! Do ask young people here
and most of them can speak English. What is more, let a Chinese
friend write your home address on a blank card, and it will be very
helpful.
- Is it expensive for living in China?
- No compared with most countries. 1 US dollar can
change 7.78 Chinese RMB or so. In Beijing
and Shanghai,
one meal usually cost 30-50 RMB per person, and taxi starts from 10
or 11 RMB for first 3 KMs, with 2.1-3.2 RMB per km then. A typical
Chinese family usually spends 500-2000 RMB per person in Beijing and Shanghai.
- Is it easy to be lost in Beijing
and Shanghai?
- Probably, because both cities are quite large.
To avoid such awkward situations, you may let a Chinese friend write
your home address, company address, and travel destination on a
paper, so that you can ask some people. Chinese people are usually
warm to foreigners.
